Rhyming Riddle 29

Here is today's riddle:

My mouth is larger than my head;
I never sleep, but I have a bed;
not by food but by water I'm fed.
Who am I?

clue:My mouth has no lips or tongue or teeth.
clue:My head has no ears or eyes or nose.
clue:I never sleep because I'm always moving.

reveal/hide answerA river.

This is one of those multiple-meanings-of-a-word riddles: mouth, head, bed... they are not what you might think at first!

Rhyming Riddle 28

Here is today's riddle:

White dress, red nose;
she has no feet or hands,
yet the longer she stands,
the shorter she grows.

clue:Don't touch her red nose: it's hot!
clue:Her white dress is perfectly smooth.
clue:Sometimes she stands on top of a cake.

reveal/hide answerA candle.

This is a household object that used to be part of everyone's daily life, but that is no longer true. Although it is part of everyone's YEARLY life... but usually she doesn't get to stand for a long time, like she used to!

Rhyming Riddle 27

Here is today's riddle:

Two little holes
in the side of a hill,
and then down below
a red door to a mill.
What is the hill and what is the mill?

clue:It's hard for you to see this hill.
clue:But if you look in the mirror, you'll see it.
clue:The mill grinds up good and then washes it away.

reveal/hide answerYour nose and mouth.

The mill is not a part of people's lives nowadays, but it used to be an important part of life, especially for people who lived in the country. You could grow grain, but you needed a mill to grind that grain in order to make it into flour. Of course, the mill here is a metaphorical mill... and everybody has one!

A wee wee man in a bright red coat;
staff in my hand, stone in my throat.
What am I?

clue:I'm good to eat!
clue:My staff is my stem.
clue:I am good to eat, but my stone is not.

reveal/hide answerA cherry.

In my family, we used the word "pit," not "stone," for this fruit. But then I learned the folk song which is sometimes called "The Riddle Song," and that's how I learned about the stone!
