Rhyming Riddle 36

Here is today's riddle:

I don't really fly,
that's just something people say,
but still you can't stop me,
try though you may:
I always keep going,
day after day after day.
Who am I?

clue:People say I fly when you're having fun.
clue:People also say that I am money.
clue:They also say I heal all wounds!

reveal/hide answerTime.

I used proverbs for the clues this time! (So to speak!)

Rhyming Riddle 35

Here is today's riddle:

There is a king made of silver, round-faced and pale,
whose knights all shine brightly in armor and mail,
but when the golden king comes at the first break of day,
the pale king and his knights soon all run away.
Who are these kings and who are the knights?

clue:The golden king wears a crown of fire.
clue:The silver king does not always show his face.
clue:The silver king has thousands and thousands of knights.

reveal/hide answerThe sun, moon, and stars.

This is one of my favorite riddles. The version I know is actually about a knight who arrives waving a yellow banner, but I decided to make him the golden king, driving away the silver king. That made it easier to rhyme too!

My top and bottom both agree;
My middle's slender as can be.
So: flip me, spin me, mirror me!
Each time the same thing you will see.
What am I?

clue:My top is nothing.
clue:My bottom is nothing too!
clue:But rotate me, and I am everything!

reveal/hide answerThe number 8.

I started with a rhyming riddle that just rhymed the 2nd and 4th lines, but I made all the lines rhyme.

The gust of the wildest storm
I can make a welcome guest;
in the North or the South, I'm unknown,
but I'm found in the East and the West.
Who am I?

clue:I'm not in the storm, but I am in a hurricane.
clue:Not in a tornado, but I come at the end of a cyclone.
clue:I'm not in the north, but I'm in the northwest; not in the south, but in the southeast.

reveal/hide answerThe letter E.

This is one of my favorite kind of riddles!

Here is today's riddle:

This strange mother her children devours,
Who come running to her at all hours.
While she moans, "Oh my darlings, my dears!"
She sheds buckets of bitter, salt tears.
Who is this mother, and who are her children?

clue:The children are able to run, but they have no feet.
clue:The mother's tears are salty, but the children's tears are sweet.
clue:The mother has no stomach, but still she can eat.

reveal/hide answerThe sea swallowing rivers.

The clues to this riddle rhyme too! For another clue, take a look at Riddle 28.

Rhyming Riddle 31

Here is today's riddle:

There is an old man with a long grey beard,
But he has no bones: isn't that weird?
He rises up tall, soars into the sky,
and then he is gone: goodbye! goodbye!
Who is that old man?

clue:You can smell this man from far away.
clue:He likes to sit by the fire.
clue:If you get close to him, he makes you cough!

reveal/hide answerSmoke.

This is a traditional riddle, and I had fun creating a rhymed version. This is another one of those riddles that belongs to an old-fashioned way of life, before electricity took the fire out of our lives. But imagine a campfire, or maybe you have an actual wood-burning fireplace. If you do, you have seen this old man!

Rhyming Riddle 30

Here is today's riddle:

There is a convent shut up tight,
without any bells or towers,
and in it many little nuns
are making sweets from flowers.

clue:These are little flying nuns.
clue:They store their sweets in little wax jars.
clue:Don't make them angry: they will sting you!

reveal/hide answerBees in a beehive.

This is another one of those riddles that is about a bygone world (I don't even know where the convent nearest to me is located, much less a convent with bells and towers!), but it is so charming that I felt like I had to include it.

Rhyming Riddle 29

Here is today's riddle:

My mouth is larger than my head;
I never sleep, but I have a bed;
not by food but by water I'm fed.
Who am I?

clue:My mouth has no lips or tongue or teeth.
clue:My head has no ears or eyes or nose.
clue:I never sleep because I'm always moving.

reveal/hide answerA river.

This is one of those multiple-meanings-of-a-word riddles: mouth, head, bed... they are not what you might think at first!

Rhyming Riddle 28

Here is today's riddle:

White dress, red nose;
she has no feet or hands,
yet the longer she stands,
the shorter she grows.

clue:Don't touch her red nose: it's hot!
clue:Her white dress is perfectly smooth.
clue:Sometimes she stands on top of a cake.

reveal/hide answerA candle.

This is a household object that used to be part of everyone's daily life, but that is no longer true. Although it is part of everyone's YEARLY life... but usually she doesn't get to stand for a long time, like she used to!

Rhyming Riddle 27

Here is today's riddle:

Two little holes
in the side of a hill,
and then down below
a red door to a mill.
What is the hill and what is the mill?

clue:It's hard for you to see this hill.
clue:But if you look in the mirror, you'll see it.
clue:The mill grinds up good and then washes it away.

reveal/hide answerYour nose and mouth.

The mill is not a part of people's lives nowadays, but it used to be an important part of life, especially for people who lived in the country. You could grow grain, but you needed a mill to grind that grain in order to make it into flour. Of course, the mill here is a metaphorical mill... and everybody has one!

Rhyming Riddle 26

Here is today's riddle:

A wee wee man in a bright red coat;
staff in my hand, stone in my throat.
What am I?

clue:I'm good to eat!
clue:My staff is my stem.
clue:I am good to eat, but my stone is not.

reveal/hide answerA cherry.

In my family, we used the word "pit," not "stone," for this fruit. But then I learned the folk song which is sometimes called "The Riddle Song," and that's how I learned about the stone!

clue:Think about what happens at a wedding.
clue:Who gets married?

reveal/hide answerA minister (priest, chaplain, rabbi, etc.).

This is a traditional riddle so it is about a man, but you could also write a version about a woman who has married many a husband but stays single all her life.

Four fingers and a thumb,
yet flesh and blood I have none.
Who am I?

clue:I have fingers, but no fingerprints.

reveal/hide answerA glove.

It is not an exact rhyme, but it's a good enough near-rhyme, and I like this riddle so much I had to include it!

This is another riddle topic: it's an everyday object... but it's quite a strange thing when you think about it!

Who am I?

clue:I am as old as the earth.
clue:Sometimes I am so thin you cannot see me at all.
clue:When I pull, I move the ocean's tides.

reveal/hide answerThe moon.

There are lots of riddles for this topic, but I liked the scientific detail about the ocean; that's not something you see so often.

clue:The robbers used a net.

This is not an easy riddle, but I liked the part about the "house leaping out the windows" that I just had to include it!

Rhyming Riddle 19

Here is today's riddle:

My first is in wood but isn't in tree;
My second's in four and also in three;
My third is in music and also in tune;
My fourth is in May but isn't in June;
My whole makes a noise with a beat.
What am I?

clue:There is only one letter that is in both four and three.
clue:There is only one letter that is in both music and tune.
clue:Choose which letter in wood could come before -R-U-.

reveal/hide answerD-R-U-M.

The first line in this riddlebee is a hard one because there are three letters that are in "wood" and not in "tree"... and it's kind of cool and weird that the words "wood" and "tree" have nothing in common, right? So too the fourth line: there are three letters that are in "May" and not in "June"... because once again, even though the months are right next to each other on the calendar. So the clues focus on steering you to the much easier lines two and three!

Rhyming Riddle 18

Here is today's riddle:

Tim-O Tom-O Four-Wheel Drive:
I'm always coming, but never arrive.

clue:Tim-O: I start with T.
clue:Tom-O: I start with TOM.
clue:Tom-O: I go O - O - O.

reveal/hide answerTomorrow.

It was fun writing the rhyme line to give clues to the sound of the answer, but if you want a pure nonsense line, that's possible too. It could be: Tim-O Tom-O Flibbity-Flive.

O O O!

Rhyming Riddle 17

Here is today's riddle:

Voice-less I cry;
Wing-less I flutter;
Tooth-less I bite,
And mouth-less I mutter.
Who am I?

clue:You can hear me, but you cannot see me.
clue:I bite when I am cold.
clue:I am moving all the time, but I never get tired.

reveal/hide answerThe wind.

This is one of the riddles that J.R.R. Tolkien has Bilbo pose to the creature Gollum in The Hobbit. Tolkien was a keen scholar of tradition riddles, and this riddle rates highly as a faux-traditional riddle: if you didn't know if was from Tolkien, you would suppose it to be truly old, right? It was fun picking a picture of this invisible thing:

Rhyming Riddle 16

Here is today's riddle:

Mee-nee Mie-nee Lemonade,
I've been here since Earth was made,
Mee-nee Mie-nee Apple Pie:
One month old or less am I.

clue:Mee-nee Mie-nee: I start with M.
clue:Mee-nee Mie-nee: N's my end.
clue:Mee-nee Mie-nee: I shine at night.

reveal/hide answerThe moon.

I made up the refrain, and I thought it would be fun to use food words to make the rhymes, although it could also just be all nonsense: Mee-nee Mie-nee Lee-Lo-Lade... Mee-nee Mie-nee Lee-Lo-Lie
